Aurick Brackett

Here's Aurick Smith, age 53 in 1870 in Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois.  Born in Vermont, working as a Carpenter. With wife Anis, 50 and son William, age 28, both also born in Vermont

If that's the uncle of my Aurick Brackett, he's born in 1817 or 1816, and would have been 23 when he inherited the family farm in Clarendon, Vermont with her his brother Spencer Smith.

Eliza Brackett

Eliza Brackett is a daughter of Samuel Brackett and Sallie/Sally Smith.  Born in 1827, dies 1869.
She's on the 1850 Census with her family in St. Albans, at age 14.

In 1870 her mother and sister are a household in Rutland, Vermont.  But I don't know where Eliza is.

The only source I have for her death is the Brackett Genealogy book in 1909.  If they knew of a marriage, they would have listed it.

Here is an Eliza Brackett, age 20, seamstress.  Living with Emery and Mary Harvard in Rutland in 1860.  At least, their last name is indexed as Harvard.  It could be Howard.  It could be something else.  Could this be my Eliza Brackett, who would be 24 in 1860?

There's a 23 year old Eliza Brackett living in Chesterville Maine in 1860 census, but she's living with 34-year-old Sewall Brackett, so that Eliza Brackett is probably married to Sewall Brackett and has a different last name at birth.

Find A Grave

Has Sally Brackett buried in the same cemetery with her son John De Forest Brackett.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/74777994/sally-brackett

Lists her parents as John Smith and Dolly Crary.  Lists lots of children for John and Dolly, including Sally's younger brother Aurick.

Bracket Book Exceprts

Here's Samuel Brackett, born around 1800, moved to Clarendon, Vermont at some point (where?), with brother John (there is no John, do they mean Josiah?)  in the 1909 Brackett Genealogy Book. I want to look for him on a Clarendon census.  This is my only source that Sallie Brackett was born a Smith of Clarendon, that she dies in 1887.
That's a typo, Family 52 is headed by John de Forest Brackett: should be John de F.

Samuel Brackett's brother Josiah settled in Plattsburgh as a wholesale baker, married the daughter of a influential attorney, but dies while the children are young.  If I'm reading this correctly.

And finally, the family of Sallie Smith's son, Aurick Brackett.

Looking for Sallie Smith on a Census

On the  1820 Census there's a Samuel Brackett in Barnet, Calendonia County, Vermont, with some older household members.  Sally Smith doesn't marry Samuel until 1826.

On the 1830 Census there's again a Samuel Brackett in Barnet, Vermont.  Right size household, but the ages?  I don't think this is my Samuel Brackett.

On the same 1830 Census there's Samuel Brackett in St. Albans.  So I think the Barnet family and the St. Albans family are different sets of people.  I think this is my Samuel Brackett.

Samuel Brackett in St. Albans, 1840. Family of 5, who is the older female?
Male age 5-10 could be John DeForest Brackett, age 6
Male age 40-50 could be Samuel Brackett himself, age 40
Female age less than 5 years old, would be Eliza Brackett, age 4
Female age 15-20, maybe another Canadian teenager servant?
Female age 40-50, but Sally is age 34 at time?

Samuel Brackett in St. Albans 1850.  Census taken September 10, 1850.  Notice the 6-months old baby Sarah S, so she's born in March or early April.  And here's Aurick Brackett on the census.
Samuel Brackett will die June 25, 1851, when his youngest daughter Sarah S. is a few months more than a year old.
Ann Barber, 16-year-old Canadian, is probably a servant?

Now in 1870 I find a Sarah Brackett in Rutland, with a daughter Sarah S..  Ages 64 and 21.  Sally Brackett is keeping house as an occupation, and her daughter is a Typesetter.

On the 1880 Census Sally Smith is in Kansas City, Missouri with her daughter Sarah.  Sallie Smith lists herself as born in Vermont, father born in Massachusetts, mother born in Connecticut.  This would match having Dolly Crary and John Smith, early settlers of Clarendon, Rutland County, Vermont as her parents.  Sallie's occupation is keeping house.  Her daughter Sarah's occupation is now Schoolteacher.  Sarah lists her parents as father from New Hampshire, mother from Vermont.  Her father Samuel Smith, who died when Sarah was 1 years old, is actually from Massachusetts.  Did Sarah make a mistake in her census interview, or do I have the wrong mother-daughter pair?  Sally Smith Brackett and her daughter Sarah S Brackett are buried in Kansas City, Missouri, in the same cemetary as son/brother John DeForest Brackett.

I'd like to confirm or rule out that Sally Smith Brackett is the daughter of John Smith and Dolly Crary.

First Day Tomato Curry with Eggs

Recipe: Approximately Indian Tomato Curry

Everyone needs a couple pantry meals, and this is one of mine. The hard part is finding 'onion seed' kalonji, mustard seed, and fenugreek seed so you can buy it and have it ready in the cupboard.

Hard boil six eggs. Peel, halve, and set aside.

Into a large mixing bowl mix:
One 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes
2 tsp chopped fresh ginger root.
2 tsp crushed garlic
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin

Set aside.

Put the following spices into a small bowl together, so you can stir-fry them together:
1 tsp "onion seed" aka kalonji or seeds of Nigella Sativa
1 tsp mustard seed
1 tsp fenugreek seed
couple dashes of dried red chili pepper

Heat 1/4 cup of oil in the pan. Or only 1 tablespoon, if you are determined to prepare food that is low-fat. Add the seed mixture, and stir fry about one minute.

Add the tomato mixture to the oil-and-seeds. Stir-fry about three minutes, then lower the heat and simmer with the lid ajar, for about seven minutes.

Remove from heat. Garnish with eggs.
For fancy and extra tasty, sprinkle lemon juice into tomatos at the end, and serve with chopped cilantro.

I usually serve this with Pulao Rice.
